Chinese contemporary artist Wang Xingwei, born in 1969 in Shenyang, China, graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Shenyang Normal University in 1990. He resided in Shanghai from 2002 to 2008 before settling in Beijing, where he currently lives and works. Wang Xingwei is one of the foremost representatives of Chinese conceptual painting. Like many contemporary Chinese artists of his generation, he inherits the traditional roots of Realism in his art. His works incorporate conceptual and symbolic elements within surreal and peculiar scenes. Wang employs art as an ongoing exploration of the fundamental meaning of creation, constructing narratives that blur the boundaries between reality and illusion through a rich and diverse visual vocabulary. His works are highly regarded and widely collected by prominent art institutions worldwide. Wang's 'Miss & Mister,' a limited edition three-dimensional piece created in collaboration with ArTy ReTro, is based on a prominent painting titled 'Untitled (Watering)' from the artist's solo retrospective exhibition at UCCA in Beijing in 2013. This painting also serves as the cover image for the exhibition catalogue. 'Miss & Mister' features the same background as 'Untitled (Watering),' providing a stage-like setting for the male and female figures depicted in the painting.
