+ OVERVIEW
Lai Wei-Yu was born in 1989 and graduated from the Institute of Taiwan University of Arts. His works have been collected by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and he has consistently held solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions. Lai's paintings intricately blend humor with complex emotions, such as panic, anger, loneliness, sorrow, and revelry, weaving them between individuals or groups and extending into more chaotic anxiety aggregates. He continually seeks vehicles for these anxieties, leading to the development of numerous series.
The series resembles Lai's diary-like life records, including depictions and reflections on societal events. He uses charcoal, a common sketching medium, in small-scale sizes. He removes details and recognizable traces, presenting various events in daily life or through media, evoking a sense of blur and slowdown. The artist extensively records these vivid memories, extracting and encapsulating them in the artwork, bearing the weight of life in a relatively light-hearted and humorous manner.
