Zheng Xiaoxu was a prominent calligrapher in modern China, known for his work in both regular script (kai) and clerical script (li). Born in Suzhou, he is often paired with Yu Youren, with the two being recognized as the leading figures in calligraphy in northern and southern China respectively. Zheng excelled particularly in regular script, drawing inspiration from Ouyang Xun and Su Shi, and was influenced by the stele inscriptions of the Northern Wei period. His calligraphy is characterized by a long, powerful, and robust style. In addition to his achievements in calligraphy, Zheng Xiaoxu was also a noted poet and a key advocate of the "Tongguang style" in poetry. Zheng Xiaoxu's contributions to both calligraphy and poetry have secured him a significant place in modern Chinese cultural history.
