Born in 1900 in Guangdong, China, Lin Fengmian went to France to study painting in 1918. At the invitation of CaiYuanpei, Lin returned to China in 1926 to become president of the Beijing Academy of Fine Arts. One of the founders of the Hangzhou National Academy of Art (formerly known as Hangzhou National College of Art), Lin is one of the most influential artists and teachers of that time. In 1952, Lin retired from teaching and devoted his energies to painting. Lin continued to paint after moving to Hong Kong 1977, where he lived until his death in 1991.
