+ OVERVIEW
Fire with Water - Chan Tso-tao
Published his first technically groundbreaking new glaze in 1982, named Fire with Water. By dripping upon celadon glaze, this verdigris glaze was made by firing in reducing atmosphere flames to produce beautiful red blushes around the verdigris surroundings. At the same time, other dual-coloured glaze types of copper red and verdigris were published. It is widely acknowledged within the circles of ceramics art that copper red has to be fired in kilns under conditions of reduction (shortage of oxygen), verdigris can only be fired under oxidized conditions (abundance of oxygen) within the kilns. To fire such extremely sensitive glazes that requires completely contrasting conditions upon a piece of work in an unobtrusive and efficient manner, by fully utilizing split second differentials within the kilns to obtain such copper red cum verdigris glaze colours, is indeed a rare and precious international breakthrough in techniques.
