+ OVERVIEW

This hexagon incense stand was made in the Kangxi Period of the Qing Dynasty. The top panel is luxuriously decorated with mother-of-pearl inlay with peach and butterfly figures. Flowers and openwork inset patterns scattered on the high waist and six cabriole legs, and the top panel of the low base is decorated with pine branches. Mother-of-Pearl shines in their vivid colours against the dark black lacquer, making this an admirable piece in a studio or a shrine. Such elongated design and slender cabriole legs enhance its elegance. Mother-of-Pearl inlay on lacquer is an extremely time-consuming task that requires superb craftsmanship. This stand is decorated with lots of elegant flourishings, making this a magnificent piece of the period. Incense burning is a common worship activity from the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Until the Song Dynasty, it has become a daily activity for relaxation while studying or playing qin. Hence it is regarded as a symbol of luxury living of scholars, and incense stands have become a common object of an accomplished scholar.
