+ OVERVIEW

LAN Chung-Hsuan: The Subtle Ripples and Gentle Resonance of an Elusive Existence Lan Chung-Hsuan, born 1991 in Taipei, Taiwan, MFA from Pratt Institute, New York. He remakes readymade images, historical documents, vintage and contemporary objects about war and disaster to explore the possibility of the absence of identity and the universality of life. Lan’s recent exhibitions include solo’Clear-air Turbulence’ at YIRI ARTS Back_Y, Taipei, ‘αβγθ’ at AKI Gallery, double solo show ‘The Ocean is Romantic because it does not drown You to Death’ at YAO, Taichung, ‘Residual Heat’ at AKI Gallery Leipzig Prospect, Leipzig, Germany;group show ‘Covered Reality: Archival Orientation and Identity in Taiwanese Contemporary Photography’ at National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung, ‘Suwon International Art Festival’ in Suwon, South Korea. Recent curatorial projects include group show ‘IMAGRATION’ at Gallery COMMON, Tokyo, Japan, ‘PROVOKE - Opposing Centrism’ at Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei. Selected awards: Arte Laguna Prize, TDCC Contemporary Arts Awards. His works could be found in the collections of Taiwan Depository & Clearing Corporation, Taiwan Art Bank, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Cultural & Educational Foundation. LAN’s Dielusion photography series originated during his residency at 3331 Arts Chiyoda in Tokyo in 2018. The project invited locals to share their personal imaginations of the end of life, with LAN photographing locations, events, and figures based on these narratives. He subtly adjusted poses and environments, introducing elements of compromise and unpredictability to craft poetic and contemplative visualizations of final moments. His Buried in the Sea series, on the other hand, interweaves poetry with seascape imagery, comprising five pieces that articulate a metaphorical voyage at sea. This journey, deeply spiritual in nature, encapsulates a spectrum of emotions—defiance, exhilaration, surrender, resignation, and darkness—serving as the artist’s direct response to the overwhelming tides of existence.
