+ OVERVIEW

Ju Ming astounded the world in 1977 with his debut exhibition of the Taichi Series in Japan and since then has created many equally memorable works. He is undoubtedly an Asian grand master of the international art scene. The Taichi series faultlessly captures his creative principles of “acquiescing to the flow of energy and progressing without force”. With his unique chiseling and chopping approach, the surfaces are connected by a lively flow of energy—there is motion in tranquility, an undercurrent of vitality unrestrained by form.

“Taichi Shadow Boxing” is a work containing a set of two complementary figures: individual pieces expressing the restraint of power and form alongside the equilibrium created by a counterbalancing force. According to the ten tenets of Taichi master Yang Chengfu, “upper and lower harmony” means: feet as the roots, strength in the legs, lead from the waist, and form in the fingers; one complete flow of energy from the waist to the feet. The abstract piece of two sparring figures created by Ju Ming conveys a realm of infinite space in their stance with a circulating force that is continuous and all-encompassing. Both are anchored firmly, one holding in the energy in its center while the other letting go with a kick. This back and forth movement creates a perfect balance of the static and the dynamic. The figures have captured the perfect instant where movement is about to be reversed, where stillness becomes active and motion becomes stationary. The continuous cycle of energy is just as Ju Ming himself described, “It is not just about the instant or the move, but the transformation of the state in between.”

Ju Ming has already announced that the Taichi Series will be completed by the imaginative and abstract piece “Taichi Arch”. This series represents the creative pinnacle of the artist and worthy of any collection or investment. The series contains the essence of Oriental culture but also transcends cultures through the universal visual language of art. Its universal appeal has continuously set records at auctions. “Taichi Shadow Boxing” is truly a masterpiece worthy of any collection.
