Since the Qing Dynasty, boxwood has been regarded as a famous material for wood carving. Religious figures such as bodhisattva, Damo, Guangong and Wenchang were common subjects of depiction during the time. Boxwood has a fine texture, suitable for carving sculptures and figures with meticulous details. Figure carving is a common form of boxwood sculptures. They are widely collected and appreciated as a high quality ornamental art. Monk ‘Budai' depicted here is traditional in style with thick brows, high cheeks, big ears and a broad smile on the face. The monk is loosely clothed showing his belly and broad chest. He is holding a bag of blessing on the right hand, and a walking stick with a hanging straw hat on the other. He is standing barefooted on his ‘Budai (bag)'. The monk was vividly depicted with a lively character. His face is round, and his smile is broad with eyes forming a line. It was believed that such depiction demonstrates his kind-hearted and cheerful personality, bringing joy to the world. It was believed that he walked around with his stick and bag, helping people in need. This sculpture portrays the unique character of the monk, in the hopes of bringing happiness to its viewers.
