+ OVERVIEW

Yang Chihung is one of the most important contemporary Chinese abstract expressionists. Not only do his works express visual images, they also explore living scenarios and life experiences as well as reflections from the exterior to the intrinsic. Although he has never shifted the topics of his focus, his brush began to paint a richer profundity after he reached his sixties. Standing in front of a large piece such as “Carefree Roaming,” one seems to be surrounded by the air of Mother Nature, with the sounds and the speed of the wind. Yang is skilled at capturing the colors and imageries in nature, to express the restlessness and freedom and the “compelling force” in Chinese aesthetics. It relates to Kant’s concept of “the sublime,” Yang’s art is no doubt a contemporary interpretation of sublime aesthetics.
