Seb Janiak: The Intersection of Science and Art, Rationality and Spirituality Born in 1966 in France, Seb Janiak is a photographic artist whose work delves into the coexistence of opposites, revealing the hidden forces shaping the physical universe. His artistic practice merges science with art, reason with poetry. He currently lives and works in Paris. Initially trained as a graphic designer, Janiak became a pioneer in digital photography during his freelance career. As his work gained international recognition, his practice expanded into music video direction, fashion photography, and fine art. Since 2011, Janiak has only used basic photographic tools. He says, “I only allow myself the techniques which have been used in analogue photography since 1850. Namely, making adjustments to contrast and exposure, and using superimposition.” When a special effect is needed in order to achieve a particular shot, he finds a way to achieve it manually rather than through digital manipulation, for example by using refraction (a prism) or reflectivity (a mirror). The fantastical images he produces seem impossible, but they are in fact pictures of the physical world that surrounds us at all times. Janiak’s fantastical images may appear surreal, yet they are grounded in the physics of the real world. He is fascinated by dualities and the unseen forces that exist beyond human perception. His work serves as a bridge between data and creativity, arguing that science and art are not truly separate—oppositions exist only as conceptual tools for understanding the multiple states of existence in the visible universe. Ultimately, his inspiration returns to philosophical inquiry, spiritual exploration, and insights into the fundamental nature of reality. Janiak’s work is highly sought after by collectors worldwide and has been exhibited at Art Basel Miami and FIAC Paris.
