Japanese artist LY was born in Tokyo in 1981. Her art seamlessly blends elements and scenes from the city she has known since childhood, including skate parks, streets, and subway stations. LY employs a subdued yet luminous black-and-white palette, which imparts a distinctive minimalist aesthetic to her works. Her exhibitions have spanned the globe, gracing cities such as Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York, Dubai, and Hong Kong. Additionally, LY has collaborated with the fashion brand COACH. At the heart of LY's artistic world is the black character known as LUV, who functions as an avatar of the artist. LUV can be found in various urban settings—walking, sitting, lying, or standing—transforming mundane daily actions into playful and fresh perspectives. 'Waiting for LUV' is a three-dimensional piece inspired by LY's painting of the same title from 2021, which fetched HKD 203,200 in a July auction. In this representation, LUV takes on the role of a serene companion, sitting by your bedside or beside a cedar tree, attentively listening to whatever you wish to share.
