+ OVERVIEW
This chest is made in huanghuali with a reddish tone and lightly polished. Few ornaments are added to the chest, so as to enhance the dense grain structure of the wood panels. Edges of the vertical walls are protected by bronze plates and floral roundels. The chest is secured with a bronze clasp and round plate at the front. Bronze loop handles are set at the side for easy transport. Excellent craftsmanship and careful selection of material allow this chest to be one of the excellent pieces of furniture of the Ming Dynasty.
The designs of Ming furniture often appear simple yet with maximum utility. They are often rectangular in shape with rounded edges. As for the choice of material, carpenters skilfully make use of wood panels with careful attention to detail, so as to maintain its natural grains and beauty. This chest is a typical form in the Ming Dynasty and was an essential object of a Ming studio. It is designed for storage of books, thus becoming a symbol of knowledge and power of a scholar.
