+ OVERVIEW

Michell Hwang's achievements in painting are dazzling and obvious to us all, but his breakthroughs and outstanding performance in sculpture are rarely mentioned. There were some irregularities painting occasionally appearing before he started creating sculptures. As a triptyque work called "Continuation" he created in 1982, which explores inheritance among the family, He clearly broke through from the traditional flat surface painting from, and added ready-made objects to change the original structure. This work should be his first work to start explorating into threedimensional
paintings. He placed a three-dimensional columnar construction in the middle of his work, and a figure of pregnant woman was leaning on this pillar, which also symbolizes as a continuation. This motherly female body image also laid down the foundation that the artist was going to undertake in his sculpture creation in the future.

Michell Hwang sometimes created three-dimensional works with mixed media before 1995, but there are not many of them, the materials used were mainly wood and semi-finished products. Up
until 1995, he moved his studio and set up a large sculpture plant, He finally managed to create many superb large-scale stainless steel sculptures in 1996. His creative performance was brilliant, and was affirmed by the art world and collectors, his artistic career hence reached another climax. On contrary to the impression given by his paintings in the past, the sculptures of Michell Hwang are composed with simple and clean lines and along with singular but bright colors, these make the work and its expressions feel like even more pure and modern. In the two different forms of artistic expressions between flat surface and three-dimensional works, the artistic vocabulary that he displayed seems to be the same, but simultaneously they are mutually complementary, distinctly showing his abundant creative energy and exuberant vitality. He is truly an admirable artist.
