+ OVERVIEW

Jurek Wajdowicz: Flowing Between Reality and Abstraction, Finding Freedom in Dreamlike Serenity Polish-American artist Jurek Wajdowicz (b. 1951) is a distinguished graphic designer and fine art photographer. He holds a Master of Arts degree from the Łódź Academy of Fine Arts and currently lives and works in New York City. Known for his minimalist and semi-abstract approach, Wajdowicz crafts dreamlike imagery that captures fleeting moments of stillness while pushing the boundaries between photography and painting. Internationally acclaimed for his documentary collaborations with NGOs in conflict zones and areas of crisis, Wajdowicz has built a stellar reputation through his design studio’s work with leading global nonprofit organizations. His contributions to the field of design earned him recognition in Graphic Design: USA magazine’s 50th-anniversary survey as one of the "most influential graphic designers of the past 50 years." The camera is Wajdowicz’s sole creative medium—he rejects digital post-production, instead relying purely on his lens to shape each image. Through an exploration of light, color, and form, he creates works that hover on the threshold of abstraction, sometimes fully embracing it. His photography exudes both poetic rhythm and musicality, guiding viewers on an intimate journey of interpretation and inviting them to discover their own perspective within his images. "I want my work to float between representation and abstraction...perceived and imagined... emotional freedom to the viewer. " Wajdowicz’s work has been exhibited in New York, Paris, Poland, and Vienna, and is held in esteemed collections, including the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York, the Museum of Art in Łódź, the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Hamburg, and the Rockefeller Foundation in New York.
