+ OVERVIEW

Pursuit of Belongingness, The Trans-Era Style of Michell Hwang

Being the first generation of outstanding contemporary artists inTaiwan after the war, Michell Hwang, along with his unique artistic vocabulary, his painting full of characteristic charm and mystic as seen in the Orient, this has eventually brought him prestigious status in the Chinese art world. His art has gone through the style of vernacular realism in the early 1970s, the humanity tenderness in the 1980s, along side the period of installation expression. In the 1990s, his semi-abstract style depicted the vibrant and lively lifestyle in metropolitan city, this distinctive decadent of gorgeousness clearly reflected his imagination while approaching to the end of century. After the year of 2000, he expanded his creation to large-scale three-dimensional works, his symbolic and iconic way of expression, obviously inherited from the language of his oil painting, these are all his subjective emotional experience.

This Spring auction of Modern and Contemporary Aisan Art presents "A Group of Women in East Taipei" , which has the classic visual language of Michell Hwang as seen in the1990s. During 1990 to 1997, he created a portrait series of characters with the metropolitan city as background. He created a variety of proud and gorgeous metropolis figures by using lines and colors. By simply outlining the natural body of women, he smoothly depicted the rhythmic movement the rhythmic movement with the abstract expression of from and structure in the painting.
