+ OVERVIEW

"The art of Yin Zhaoyang opened the door to the theme of romance for the youth born during the 1970's, creating the self-image and emotional identity of this generation. As the first practitioner of the "Youth Cruel Painting"his art played an important role in realist paintings from the end of the 1990's in China. In his art, Yin Zhaoyang gives the expression of youth an important role in the re-examination of humanity, creating an emotional context for the youthful experiences of an entire period. A dramatic visual and narrative tension is conveyed through this context, expressing how the people of this generation had become psychologically trapped in the internal paradox of the post-ideological era. In the subjectivity of the imagery, Yin Zhaoyang's composition "strips" the objective coloration from the designs, creating a sense of directness between the scene and reality. In its method of expression, Yin Zhaoyang's paintings adopt a realistic drawing style where "technique"is hidden. The focus is instead on the psychological "set"of the overall composition, showing his outstanding talent for expression. During the 1990's the "Youth Cruel Painting"style led by Yin Zhaoyang and others gave paintings a novel experimental and conceptual depth in their narrative, composition and aesthetic interest. This set an important trend in the avant-garde paintings of the decade.?(Excerpted from "Recommendation of Yin Zhaoyang"of Chu Chi, "Utopia & Youth: Solo Exhibition by Yin Zhaoyang" Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art, 2004 March 28 ~ April 12.)
