+ OVERVIEW
Shiy De-jinn returned to Chinese aesthetics in his later years. He especially admired the seal script and the rubbing of the clerical script of the Chin and Han Dynasties. His later watercolor and ink wash creations also benefited from his diligent calligraphy practice. Never considering it a difficult task, he practiced calligraphy like morning worship every day from 1969. The feeling of his brush gliding across the paper gave him a great sense of enjoyment. Chinese people begin practicing their hand writing when they are young, yet one needs to practice hard to write well. Shiy used to say that “calligraphy appears to be easy but it is not.” Under his diligent practice, his calligraphic skill became so sophisticated that he gradually developed his own unique style.
“Selected Messages of President Chiang Kei-shek” was written with small seal script rather than copying stone inscription. The words are excerpted from Selected Messages of President Chiang Kei-shek published in 1976. During that period, almost every student memorized these words, with many schools hanging copies. Because his close friend ran a family business on education, Shiy wrote this couplet especially for him, who hung it in his school principal office for many years, showing the significance of this special period of time.
