+ OVERVIEW
This oil painting “Le Jour S’évanouit” was created in 2006, which has such a strong color contrast and the composition is divided into two. The background of upper half is in light blue and green, a few strokes in white sort of like the morning light radiates through the sky background, where a variety of blue and green layers overlapping each other. The blurry background creates a sense of superficial and restlessness, as if the state of condition expresses the perspective, which is so profound and subtly points out the distance between the viewer. While the soft and gradual blue and green colors diffuse in the edge of the background, the artist employed the short, yet quick and instant brushstrokes in the centre, and thick application of oil paints gently flowing down, the movement is full of tension and conflict, the intersect is so dynamic and dramatic. The spontaneous brushstrokes in dark reddish-brown converge upon the mild background, where highlighted with bright rays of light as depicted in creamy-white color. Through the transformation of brushstrokes, which is exerted as smoothly as calligraphy, undoubtedly presents the concept of space that has always been abstract and obscure. Strokes point towards different directions and multi layers of color sometimes are stagnant, while sometimes are proliferated, the vast space therefore is exhibited via mutual transfusion. The artist’s flexibility in the utilisation of colors and strokes, can create different levels of dynamic movement and space sensation. Under the notion of interlocking time and space, there is a vague sense of time changes and evolves hinted, which is indeed rather appropriately echoing the title “Le Jour S’évanouit”.
The first half is sort of like a sunny day, the interaction between blue, green and white colors bringing in a glimpse of warm daylight. The bottom half is noticeably full of thick oil paints such as black, reddish-brown, dark green and navy blue, their brushstrokes are executed wildly and decisively, the evolution of layers creates the intertwining effect. A few brushes of dirt yellow even ingeniously reflect the dark background, discreetly revealing the source of light. On the color composition, the artist makes use of the texture and density and their correlation in slightly affecting one and the other, developing a turning point among a variety of visual layers. The confrontation between the upper half of pastel sky and the lower part of heavy dark ground, the shades are clearly overlapping, in addition to the fine lines, the artist’s mesmerising brushstrokes and rendering techniques are completely displayed. In accordance with the rhythm, all these various forms of differences and fluctuations such as light versus heavy, help to create a far-reaching and endless space, which indeed seems to suggest the artist’s mindset towards nature and philosophy.
