+ OVERVIEW
This figure of a buffalo and a boy is carved on bamboo with outstanding skills, depicting the features and proportions in meticulous detail. The buffalo is hunched, looking upwards to its left, as the boy pulls the string tied to its neck and nostrils. This contrasts with the seated boy who is confidently gleaming with a wide smile. The vividness of the buffalo and the boy could be seen through the outstanding skills by the bamboo craftsman. The sculpture is in radiant and brownish colour. It is carved meticulously in detail, using the texture of bamboo as the hair of the buffalo. This figure would have aroused the urge for an austere life in the countryside within a scholar in ancient times. This figure suggests poems written by poets of the past. Sometimes buffalo herding was associated with meditation and Zen as it suggests dealing with hardships with a calm mind. The expression of the herd boy would also suggest a relaxed psychological state of mind.
