+ OVERVIEW

The creative world of George Chann, like his art, is mysterious and subject to endless interpretation. For over 40 years, George Chann had lived a life of a hermit, alone in his studio, he meticulously scraped out layer upon layer of unique pieces in his own Chinese abstract expressionism. Chann never let commercial viability get in the way of his art, whether in his earlier figurative works of the 1950s or his later abstract pieces, and is committed wholeheartedly into expressing his inner world. We are only able to get a glimpse of his creative ideals through short articles on his thoughts after an exhibition written by a student close to him and a few records provided by his family. History is not what makes art captivating, but rather the spark that reverberates through one's core after seeing the art, face to face. “Bronze and Stone Variation” is from the 1960s, in it, Chann freely created rich layers using symbols of Chinese calligraphy which have been used throughout history. This was a period where his creative force was at its peak and his style developed to maturity. Over the main hues, a vibrant and tapestry-like creation dances across the space with vitality as though there was unheard music in the background. George Chann was a Chinese American abstract expressionist, who quietly stayed in the background and left behind his essence thorough a lifetime of work through the language of art.
