+ OVERVIEW
Emerging visual artist Von Hyin Kolk, based in New York, has been active in the city since her solo exhibition in Australia in 2017. She also participated in the ‘Naked Lunch’ exhibition curated by Spring Break Art Show in 2022 in New York. Von Hyin Kolk blends her life experience as a second-generation Cantonese immigrant with childhood memories and nostalgic symbols of Cantonese cuisine. The narrative images in her paintings convey the tension torn between the spectrum of East and West, imagination and reality. In the painting ‘Tsing Yu Fan (Steamed Fish),’ a traditional steamed fish is surrounded by figures that appear like blurry, faded photographs from family albums, floating within memories. The dish becomes a bond that solidifies connections, preventing loved ones from dispersing into the background and allowing them to continue glowing.
