+ OVERVIEW
Born in Spain in 1981, Hugo Alonso graduated from the Fine Arts in Salamanca and Rome and currently resides in Spain. His artistic journey began with painting and has since expanded into video, sound, and installation art. Alonso's works explore the relationship between cinematic reality and everyday life, as well as the possible analogies between the history of painting and cinema, using them as a medium for self-awareness and insight into the surrounding environment. Seemingly mundane and repeatedly themes such as landscapes, houses, salons, and figures become metaphors and unstable elements in Alonso's constructed visual world drifting within our cinematographic unconsciousness. They create a visual crevice that is both familiar and unfamiliar, weaving through hazy narrative scenes. Alonso's exhibitions span the globe in cities like Madrid, Los Angeles, Barcelona, and Montreal. He has participated in numerous international art fairs and has garnered acclaim from institutions and collectors worldwide, including Colección SOLO, MUSAC, DA2, CAB, BMW Foundation, renowned collector Pilar Citoler, Diputación de Salamanca, Gaceta Foundation, Caja España, and Junta de Castilla y León. The New York Times Magazine invited him to create a specific artwork for the October 2017 cover.
