Chu Teh-I 曲德義
Taiwanese 1952
Chu Teh-I was born in 1952 in South Korea. During his university years, he pursued studies at the National Taiwan Normal University's Department of Fine Arts. Following his graduation, he embarked on an educational journey to France, enrolling in the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. With a spirit akin to that of a playful child, Chu Teh-I consistently challenges himself. His mastery of color and the aesthetic presentation of material conflicts demonstrate his distinctive perspective. Underlying his rational color segmentation lies an exuberant brushstroke juxtaposed with spontaneous splashes. The embodiment of "spatial awareness" stands as a pivotal element in Chu Teh-I's works. Guided by his persistent pursuit of "breaking inertia," he employs layering techniques, followed by meticulous polishing of pigments. This process disrupts the original textures of overlaid pigments, resulting in a dreamlike, ethereal quality that challenges the conventional order of time and space, evoking a mysterious turbulence to the visual experience. Chu Teh-I's artworks have found homes in collections across Taiwan, France, Australia, Hong Kong, South Korea, China, and the Arab world. He was an Professor of the Department of Fine Arts of Taipei National University of the Arts, and was the curator of Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts.
