Ji Dachun (born in 1968 in Nantong, Jiangsu) graduated from the Oil Painting Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1993. His work often blends traditional Chinese painting forms with postmodern contradictory imagery to explore the dialectics between Eastern and Western cultures.
His compositions frequently feature large areas of negative space, with the subject positioned centrally but occupying only a small portion of the canvas. This reflects the traditional approach in Chinese landscape painting, where figures are often rendered diminutive against vast mountains and rivers, symbolizing reverence and awe for nature.
In Ji’s portraits, the expressions are often static, and the figures appear rigid, almost like still life, evoking a sense of estrangement that is both absurd and whimsical. While the imagery may seem childlike and innocent, it also carries undertones of dark humor. Ji's painting style is characterized by wit and humor, along with a serene and ethereal quality, infused with romantic and Zen-like poetic sentiments.
