Houben Tcherkelov, born on January 23, 1970, in Kardzhali, Bulgaria, is a distinguished painter and experimental artist currently residing in New York. He studied painting at the National Academy of Arts in Sofia, where he became involved with the radical art movement associated with the XXL Gallery. Tcherkelov's early works often explore themes related to post-communist Bulgaria through photographs, films, and installations. His video work Suitable Suit gained recognition for its satirical take on societal norms.
In recent years, Tcherkelov has focused on painting national currencies, employing techniques such as impasto, glaze, and watercolor. His art critiques how symbolic imagery can legitimize national power, revealing the deeper meanings behind currency designs. His works have been showcased in numerous exhibitions, including those at The Bronx Museum and the 54th Venice Biennale, and he is the subject of the documentary “Houben Paints Money”.
