Gao Xing-jian is a Chinese émigré novelist, playwright, painter, and director, who in 2000 was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Gao was born in Jiangxi, China in 1940. In 1957, Gao graduated from the Department of French, Beijing Foreign Studies University. The ink wash painting by Gao Xing-jian is a kind of breakthrough and fusion of the artistic concept of Chinese traditional ink wash painting and Western abstract painting, while realizing the modern aesthetics and the contemporary sensibility. Gao Xing-jian was awarded the title Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by France. In 2003, it is the “Year of Gao” in Marseille, France, featuring his painting, theatre, opera and cinema, and in 2008, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macao organized the “Gao Xingjian Arts Festival” in Hong Kong.
