Born in Fujian Luozhou, he was admitted as a metropolitan graduate and devoted himself to education throughout his life. He was a lecturer in the Hanlin School and founded the Fujian Normal University. He became the teacher of Puyi and served as sub-chancellor in the Grand Secretariat and as vice president of the Ministry of Rites.
