He Tian-Jian, also known as He Jun, was born in Jiangsu, specialized in Chinese paintings and calligraphy. He was regarded as one of the greatest painters at the same ranking as Huang Bin-Hong, Zhang Daqian and Wu Hu-Fan, and was highly acclaimed as a prominent artist-historian of the Shanghai School. His ideology of one brush for all genres highlighted his skills in landscapes paintings through observation. The artist reinvented gradient painting techniques of green in the treatment of light and shadows of a relief.
