Chen Xi was born in Shanghai in 1966, and moved to Austria in 1993. Chen Xi was trained in mastering traditional ink painting skills and realistic painting techniques during his university years at the Art Academy of Shanghai, a highly selective institution at the time. He continued his studies at Academy of Fine Arts in Austria after graduated from university in 1995. He graduated with honors in 2005. Given his talent and several years of studying in Europe, he developed an unique style of landscape painting by layering several Chinese xuan papers together, a mixture use of the Chinese material with a Western abstract concept in one.
