Hsu Yunghsu was born in 1955 in Kaohsiung. He graduated from National Pingtung University of Education and obtained a Master's degree in Applied Arts from National Tainan University of the Arts. Currently residing in Tainan, his artistic journey took a pivotal turn in 1992 when he stepped into the realm of art competitions. Notably, 1994 marked a significant milestone as he secured the first prize in an art exhibition hosted by the North American Pavilion. This achievement catapulted him into a trajectory of consistent successes in diverse competitions. From 1996, he expanded his focus to the international stage and finally achieved the top prize at the International Ceramics Competition Mino, Japan in 2008. His artistic approach revolves around using the body as the main subject of creation. He integrates with the artistic materials, allowing the senses of touch, perception, and pain to interact with the predominantly clay-based structures, resulting in dynamic artworks. Hsu employs complex and labor-intensive processes, blending with the environment, climate, and firing techniques to present the purest form of sculptural works. Through a continuous process of deconstruction and construction, he transforms the initially heavy essence of clay into delicate lines and forms. The artist has held solo exhibitions at the Taipei Museum of Contemporary Art, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, and the Ju Ming Museum.
