Kazuya Sakamoto 坂本和也
Japanese 1985
Kazuya Sakamoto was born in 1985 in Tottori, Japan. He graduated from the Nagoya University of Arts with a degree in fine arts in 2014 and currently resides and creates in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Sakamoto's upbringing in lush, verdant surroundings and a humid atmosphere left an indelible mark on him, much like a birthmark on one's skin. Consequently, he portrays the aquatic plant landscapes from his memories. In Sakamoto's artwork, intertwined plant forests come to life with thick brushstrokes and rich pigments, pulling viewers into his art world. Through meticulous repetition and careful crafting, he seemingly depicts the continuous evolution and adaptation of these sprawling aquatic plants, subtly hinting at the various competitive differences that arise among individuals and groups within our diverse global social ecosystem. By employing carefully calculated compositions and colors, Sakamoto transfers his bodily sensations onto the canvas, exploring alternative avenues of conveying meaning. The artist has held solo exhibitions at venues such as the Nichido Contemporary Art, Gallery Nichido Taipei, and the Yonago City Museum of Art.
