Taiwanese 1908-1990

Shen Yao-Tsu (1908-1990) was born in the Zhao’an County of China’s Fujian Province. Shen took up painting at a young age, learning from an elderly painter within his family, Shen Jing Hu, and later studied in a fine arts school in Shantou. He was heavily influenced by the art styles of Qi Baishi, Wu Changshuo, Ren Buonian, and Jin Shi, thus specializing in painting floral designs, birds, and mountains. At the end of 1948, he moved to Taiwan, and accepted a teaching post to remain in Taiwan due to ongoing warfare. In August of 1973, he held a solo exhibition of his works in the National Museum of Taiwan History. In 1983, he was named one of the top 10 artists in Taiwan. In 1975 and 1990, he published a collection of his works in Taiwan. In 1985, Shen relocated to his hometown of Zhao’an. Finally, before his death in 1990, he invested a large sum of his wealth in the creation of the Shen Yao-Tsu Art Museum in his hometown.
