CHUANG Yen 莊嚴
Taiwanese 1899-1980

Chuang Yen, also known as Chuang Shang-Yan or Zhuang Mu-Ling and affectionately known as “Retiree 61”, was born in Changchun of China’s Jilin Province. Chuang is an antique expert, art historian, and calligraphist — especially known for his gold calligraphy. He has served as the assistant director of the National Palace Museum of Taiwan and has made many great contributions to the preservation of national treasures of Taiwan. In his later years, he was affectionately known as “Retiree 61”, as at 61 years of age, his daily routine of writing, walking, drinking, sitting, practicing martial arts, and self-reflection made him the mirror image of the original “Retiree 61”, famous Song dynasty scholar Ouyang Xiu.
