Zeng Fanzhi was born in 1964 in Hubei, China. He studied oil painting at the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, where he was greatly influenced by German Expressionism. Upon graduating in 1991, Zeng Fanzhi garnered critical attention for his final piece, Hospital Triptych No. 1, which was later shown at the critical “China’s New Art, Post-1989” exhibition at the Hong Kong Art Centre in 1993. The following year, Zeng Fanzhi began his celebrated Mask series, which explores isolation and identity in response to China’s transformation in the 1990s. His painting Mask Series 1996 No.6 became the highest grossing work by a Contemporary Asian artist in 2008.
