+ OVERVIEW
Hajime Sorayama was born in Ehime, Japan, in 1947, and he is renowned for his meticulous and erotic portraits of female figures. His acclaim extends beyond the realm of fine arts, encompassing the fields of illustration and industrial design. Notably, Sorayama was the designer behind Sony's original robotic pet, AIBO. In 1965, Sorayama commenced his academic journey at Shikoku Gakuin University, initially focusing on English literature. Later, he transferred to Tokyo's Central Academy of Fine Arts to pursue fine art studies. Sorayama's distinctive artistic style merges metallic textures with sensual figures, creating a unique and captivating aesthetic that enjoys worldwide popularity. He has also collaborated with international brands like Dior, XLarge, and Roger Dubuis. Sorayama remains actively engaged in exhibitions across the globe, and his works are held in esteemed collections, including those of MoMA, the Smithsonian Institution, The World Erotic Art Museum, and The Library of Congress.
One of Sorayama's notable pieces, 'Sexy Robot,' epitomizes his ability to strike a delicate balance between opposing elements. It seamlessly blends the cold, unyielding textures of metal with the seductive, curvaceous contours of the female form, resulting in a radiant and compelling fusion—powerful yet alluring, strong yet soft.
