Christopher Taylor: A Visual Fable of the Outsider, Resting in Iceland’s Serene Stillness
Born in 1958 in Skegness, England—a coastal resort town—Christopher Taylor's fascination with photography began in the 1970s during his high school years. Working summer jobs taking portraits of tourists by the seaside introduced him to the darkroom and the technical possibilities of the photographic medium.
In 1984, Taylor moved to London, where he began exhibiting his early urban photography series. Over the next two years, he traveled to China and India with his Rolleiflex camera and his wife, Álfheiður. The rich cultural heritage of these regions led him to return repeatedly for photographic projects, exhibitions, and publications.
In 1983, after marrying Álfheiður, Taylor visited her homeland, Iceland, where he spent years conducting family research. Inspired by the Icelandic Nobel laureate Halldór Laxness and Álfheiður’s familial ties, he completed three photographic series in Iceland. His recent Steinholt series has been the focus of exhibitions, including at Galerie Camera Obscura in Paris and the National Museum of Iceland. Since 1992, Taylor has been based near Montpellier in southern France. His work has been exhibited across Iceland, France, the Netherlands, Italy, China, Spain, Taiwan, Japan, and beyond.
