The imperial Ding kiln was one of the five most important kilns during the Song dynasty, and it is best know for its white porcelain. This rare Dingyao dish with a peony design and widely flaring sides is entirely covered with pure, snow-white glaze, which is among the best found among all Ding ware. The walls are decorated with stylized floral designs, and the center of the dish is embellished with an engraving of a peony broken at the stem. The flower dominates the overall design, and the carving shows smooth and highly practiced craftsmanship. The texture is firm, and the glaze has a glossy luster.
