A POLYCHROME ‘DRAGON’ BASIN WANLI AND OF THE PERIOD (1573-1619)
Of foliate form resting on a recessed foot below the everted rim, finely decorated on the interior with a pair of dragons in pursuit of a flaming pearl amidst stylized clouds in the well, the sides and everted rim similarly decorated with alternating dragons in enamels of red and blue, the biscuit base inscribed with the six character reign mark in cobalt blue within double circles. Compare with a box with a very similar decorative motif, illustrated in Selected Treasures of Chinese Art. Min Chiu Society, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, pl. 148, pp.326-327.
